The teaching of phonics runs throughout the Year 1 school day. We draw our children's attention to letters (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes) in all lessons then we have two time-tabled phonic sessions a day.
Phonics can be a daunting subject to deliver at home. First of all anything our family's do with our children is fantastic. Your child will know a lot of the sounds (phonemes) you will encounter and will enjoy practising them with you. Here are lots of different resources to support your child's phonic knowledge.
YouTube is a super resource for phonics as the sound is repeated lots of time to ensure it is pronounced correctly. Please see below links for various useful Phonic videos on YouTube.
CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) and CVCC(consonant/vowel/consonant/consonant) words are super practise for our children to blend and spell correctly. Again see below to various resources for our children to practise reading, saying and writing CVC/CVCC words.
Phonic mats with all the sounds in the phases are linked below. With your child start with Phase 2 and move up until you find what suits your child the most. Tricky word mats (words that can not be sounded out phonetically) are available below along with catchy songs which support our children's ability to just learn to spell tricky words correctly as they can not spell said words phonetically.
We also provide out children with nonsense/alien words to help them further practise the phonemes (sounds) they learn in class. Links to these nonsense words are available below.
Here is Mr T exploring 'ai'. You will notice that that the sound with be repeated to support our children's comfort with the phoneme. Whatever sound you are working on with your child you will be able to find a Mr T video on YouTube with him using your chosen sound. Have fun with Mr T and Geraldine the Giraffe.
Our children have encountered Jolly Phonics and these songs since they first entered our school. This video provides our children and our families with the correct pronunciation and the action that matches each sound.
Our Year 1 Letters and Sounds Phonics lessons. During the first lockdown these lessons were provided for our children. This is a useful resource.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
