In Year 1 our children have spelling sessions each day. We cover spelling rules, common exception words (45 words that don't follow the rules e.g. 'of'), plurals and compound words.
Spellings are applied in various ways. Children spell words individually moving on to applying said spellings in a sentence. Eventually working towards words being spelt correctly in their creative writing.
In Year 1 we gain a greater understanding of the importance of vowels and their relevance to spelling rules:-
After a short vowel the 'c' sound in a word is represented by 'ck' - click/duck/deck/pack
After a short vowel the 'l' sound in a word is represented by 'll' - ill/bell/gull/call/doll
After a short vowel the 's' sound in a word is represented by 'ss' - mess/pass/miss/boss/fuss
After a short vowel the 'z' sound in a word is represented by 'zz' - fizz/buzz/
After a short vowel the 'ch' sound in a word is replaced by 'tch' - hatch/fetch/hitch/watch/hutch
Below you will find links to Year 1 spelling exercises and videos to support plurals.
For spellings if children start with practising the word moving to spelling the word correctly in a sentence so;
they - they - they= they - they - they
They are going to play a game.
This video helps organise plurals to those words that needs us to just add an 's' to make a plural and those words that end with a 'hiss' sound which means we add a 'es'.
