Literacy

The children have literacy sessions each and every day. At the beginning of Year 1 we concentrate on our children forming sentences independently. So we encourage our children to sound the words they don't know how to spell, plan their sentences in their head to try and prevent getting mixed up in the sentence whilst trying to remember capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Phew - our little ones are remembering a lot aren't they! From Spring 1 we support our children in adding an and into their sentences when needed.

In Summer 1 we study texts based around growth and change. After sharing a book together we tend to describe the main character. Moving to sequencing the story and writing sentences about the story.

Speaking about the story also helps your child's literacy skills. Such as;

*What happens next?

*How do you think the mouse was feeling?

As we have developed our comfort with writing we encourage our children to add different openers along with more adventurous vocabulary.

As we are looking at animal life cycles, this half term we are looking at non-fiction reports using titles and reviewing glossaries.
