Year 2 looked at the effects of climate change on global warming. We found out that the earth is surrounded by an atmosphere and around the atmosphere is a layer of greenhouse gases. We discussed the increase of greenhouse gases and the effect this has on our planet. To understand this more we set up an experiment that compared two identical trays containing a house brick and two ice cubes. One tray was wrapped in cling film to represent this increased layer of greenhouse gas. Over the session we observed the change in the ice cubes and we timed how long they took to melt. We observed that the ice cubes in the tray that had been wrapped in cling film melted quicker than the tray without the cling film. This helped us to understand that the heat had been trapped under the cling film just as the heat from the sun is trapped under the increased greenhouse gases causing the planet to heat up. We talked about the impact this has on the planet and how we can help slow this problem down by walking or using our bicycles more and ensuring we reduce, reuse or recycle as much as possible.
